Underwriters Laboratories announces zero-tolerance policy for counterfeit UL Marks

NORTHBROOK, IL -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 28, 2006 -- Amid rising concerns about the threat that counterfeit products could pose to public safety, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) today renewed the not-for-profit organization's ten-year commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for goods bearing counterfeit UL Marks.

"Even one product with a counterfeit UL Mark is too many," said Brian Monks, vice president of anti-counterfeiting operations for UL. "This zero-tolerance policy for counterfeiting led UL to establish an aggressive program that helps port authorities recognize legitimate UL Marks, so that we can help prevent these goods from entering the marketplace and reaching consumers."

The mission of UL's anti-counterfeiting program is three-fold:

-- To protect the safety of consumers around the world from the health

and safety hazards of counterfeit products

-- To preserve the integrity of UL's family of Marks

-- To provide additional value to the legitimate, responsible

manufacturers that have invested the time and resources to achieve UL

product certification

UL works in partnership with the U.S. Customs Border Protection and other local, federal and international law enforcement agencies to protect its certification Marks. Through these partnerships, UL is directly involved in identifying goods that bear counterfeit Marks. UL also supports law enforcement authorities worldwide to seize counterfeit products. Since 1995, UL has assisted these agencies with more than 1,300 seizures of counterfeit products at entry ports from coast to coast, preventing millions of counterfeit products from reaching consumers. Based on past experience, products bearing a counterfeit UL Mark are typically high-volume, low-cost items such as extension cords and power strips.
