Prefabricated house manufacturer Champion Enterprises, Inc. announced that it will lay off 1,500 employees, nearly 15% of its workforce, and close the doors to 71 facilities due to a decline in demand. Champion will also close 64 retail centers and seven homebuilding plants.
As one of the nation’s largest home manufacturers, the company expects to lose between $251 and $261 million for the third quarter of 2002. By the end of the third quarter, Champion will have closed 196 retail outlets and 29 manufacturing plants since June 2000.
