General Motors announced that it plans to cut between five and 15 midsize car models by 2006 to decrease manufacturing and marketing costs.
The company intends to stay ahead of growing competition from automakers overseas by offering fewer and more distinct models from Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, and Saturn, said Gene Stefanyshyn, GM’s executive in charge of midsize models.
The company will eliminate the Buick Century, for example, to provide more money to market the Buick Regal. In addition, GM plans to cut three Oldsmobile midsize models: the Alero coupe, Alero sedan, and the Intrigue sedan. GM built 1.2 million midsize cars last year, with sales of $18.7 billion, or 18% of the total company revenue.
