Boeing has recently improved its production process by manufacturing 757s on a moving assembly line installed at its factory in Renton, Washington, a process which is said to reduce flow time and inventory levels by 30% or more.
The reconfigured assembly line moves the airplane 24 feet a day through the final assembly process. The 100-ton jetliners are pulled by an automatic, self-guided tug, which is the same device used by the 737 line. In addition, the lean system is being implemented in phases, beginning with the last point in the manufacturing process.
