Boeing, the world’s most powerful aerospace and defense group, is being challenged by a hefty competitor, its employees. Nearly 26,000 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union are on the brink of strike as they claim terms and conditions of Boeing’s most recent contract offer are unacceptable.
Union members are set to vote on the proposed contract on August 29th, and union negotiators are encouraging members to reject the offer, calling it “a continued attack on the economic health of our communities and on the jobs, incomes, and living standards of the IAM workforce.”
“Boeing wants to rip out the few protections contained in the current contract. Even worse, Boeing wants to weaken the rights of laid-off employees to return to their jobs when business picks up again. That is a heartless way to do business,” said Dick Schneider, IAM’s chief negotiator.
Boeing maintains that its new terms are competitive and fair. As with most companies in the aerospace sector, Boeing has been hit hard by the recent economic climate. Boeing has cut 50% of its jobs in the commercial aviation division since 1999, with its employee count being drastically reduced from 46,000 to 26,000.
“There has never been a more important time or a more critical vote in the long relationship between the IAM and Boeing,” said Alan Mullaly, president and CEO of Boeing’s commercial aviation division. “The pressures on our industry, our customers, and our business are tremendous. We have worked together to produce an offer that is competitive and positions us for long-term growth when the market returns. It’s important that each of our employees fully evaluates this offer, and we ask them to help us move forward together by voting to ratify it.”
