Bio-Rad opens first ASIA-pacific plant in Singapore

SINGAPORE, 4 April 2007 - Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., a multinational manufacturer and distributor of life science research and clinical diagnostics products today held the grand opening of its first manufacturing plant in the Asia-Pacific region. The new Bio-Rad plant is located in Singapore.

Occupying approximately 20,000 square feet of industrial space at Kaki Bukit View, the new facility will manufacture a variety of life science instruments used in medical and biological research labs worldwide.

Bio-Rad‘s life science products are based on technologies used to identify, separate, purify and analyse biological materials such as protein and DNA. Some of these technologies include electrophoresis, imaging, immunoassay, chromatography, microbiology, bioinformatics, transfection, amplification, real-time PCR, microarray analysis, and DNA hybridisation. Bio-Rad products are used in laboratories throughout the world, connecting researchers to solutions that help people lead longer, healthier lives.

“Bio-Rad has had a marketing presence in Asia for more than 30 years and just recently, we selected Singapore as our Asia-Pacific headquarters,” said Mr Scott Jenest, Manufacturing Operations Manager, Life Science Group, Bio-Rad Laboratories. “With many exciting changes that are taking place in Asia, we felt that Bio-Rad needed a manufacturing facility that was in close proximity to our customers in the Asia-Pacific region. Singapore was selected based on its stable government, sound infrastructure, strategic location, well-educated workforce, and strong intellectual property laws. The location offers greater access to a strong supply chain in the region, enabling Bio-Rad to support its production facilities on a global basis. But in addition to those reasons, we are pleased to play a role in Singapore’s aspiration to become a key contributor for medical development and research efforts worldwide.”

The ceremony was officiated by Mr Yeoh Keat Chuan, Executive Director of the Biomedical Sciences Group, Singapore Economic Development Board. Mr Yeoh said: “We are very pleased that Bio-Rad has decided to set up its global manufacturing facility for Life Science instruments used in amplification and analysis of genetic material in Singapore. We will continue to leverage on our established capabilities in electronics and precision engineering, and strong base of qualified suppliers to attract new companies and grow the Medical Technology industry in Singapore.”

In addition to its new manufacturing facility in Singapore, Bio-Rad’s Asia-Pacific region headquarters, which opened in December 2005, is located in Singapore.
