ENSR Assists Largest Brightfield Project in U.S.

BROCKTON, Mass. (May 17, 2007) – ENSR recently completed environmental work for the Brockton (MA) Brightfield project, the first and largest utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) array system in New England and the largest Brightfield project in the United States.

ENSR, part of AECOM, is a leading global environmental services provider.

PV systems convert energy from the sun into electricity. Converting a formerly contaminated site, known as a Brownfield, into a solar energy generating station is referred to as a Brightfield.

ENSR provided environmental consulting to achieve site closure in accordance with State and Federal environmental regulations. Project work included landfill construction, soil and sediment removal, and slip-lining sanitary and storm sewers.

When the Brightfield’s solar panels were connected with the local power grid, the system began producing enough energy to power City Hall and a portion of the police station for one year, which assists the community’s economic development strategy. The project also prevents the emission of 590,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

“The Brockton Brightfield was built thanks to an extraordinary partnership between government agencies, non-profit organizations and businesses,” said Brockton Mayor James Harrington.

The project has attracted a considerable degree of attention from elected officials and domestic and international planners
