We've written about the quirks of regionalization in consumer goods before. This may be the limit.
According to the Associated Press, Japanese consumers are enjoying their first tastes of "Pepsi Ice Cucumber," which the company launched yesterday.
Like most sodas, its flavoring is completely artificial, but emulates "the refreshing taste of a fresh cucumber," said Aya Takemoto, spokeswoman of Japan's Pepsi distributor, Suntory Ltd. It seems that Japanese consumers see cucumbers as a hot-weather treat, much like US consumers view watermelon.
Pepsi is a distant second to Coca Cola in Japan, with about 15 percent of the Japanese cola market and stiff competition from soda competitors like green tea and fizzy coffee.
No plans to market the green-colored soda in the US.
