Top grocery brands see UK sales success

Coca-Cola has continued top the charts as Britain's bestselling grocery brand. The firm achieved sales of £959.9 million in 2007 - £350 million more than its nearest rival.

The Innocent smoothie range became the fastest-growing brand, with a 45.6 per cent increase in sales boosting sales totals to £141.2 million last year.

Warburtons, the bread manufacturer, is still the second biggest seller at £609.5 million, according to data from market analysts Nielsen. Its sales increased by 17.9 per cent during 2007 when compared to the previous year.

Bernard Matthews Cooked Meats, however, experienced a massive £64 million fall in sales.

The list of top grocery brands, produced using Nielsen data, was unchanged from last year, except for Lucozade and Andrex swopping places. The list - the Checkout Nielsen Top 100 Grocery Brands report - is compiled from sales data collected from checkout scanners from 74,000 stores across Britain.

The top 10 were:

1. Coca-Cola

2. Warburtons

3. Walkers Crisps

4. Hovis

5. Cadbury Dairy Milk

6. Nescafe

7. Lucozade

8. Andrex

9. Kingsmill

10. Robinsons

"Soaring raw material costs have fuelled higher prices in the bread category in 2007 and driven value growth,” said Nielsen analysis. "At the same time, however, healthier bread products, including wholemeal and wholegrain, are in strong growth too alongside organic and premium lines."
