A Barbados-based cot manufacturer is recalling 635,000 items sold in the US after a child died by strangling itself on a faulty product.
There have also been multiple reports of further injuries inflicted by faulty drop sides on the Dorel Asia cots. The drop sides are reportedly prone to breaking and leaving space for children to become caught and consequently suffocated or strangled, as in the case of a six month old from Iowa.In that particular case the cot had been fixed unsuccessfully with duct tape by the child’s parents.
The cots were sold in Kmart, Sears and Wal-Mart across the US.
In a statement, while the company maintained that hundreds of thousands of its products have been used “without incident”, it said: "At Dorel Asia there is nothing more important than a baby's health and safety."
