The Boeing Company’s commercial airplane division is clearly struggling, with production down and a large part of its workforce on the brink of strike.
This year, Boeing has negotiated delays for 504 aircraft, a number equal to a year’s production, according to Alan Mulally, Boeing’s CEO. As it stands, only 23% of the 275 to 300 aircraft deliveries scheduled for 2003 will be delivered to US airlines, whereas in 2001, 40% of its 527 aircraft were delivered to US customers.
In addition, the 25,000 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) who are currently employed with Boeing have openly scorned the company’s latest contract, which offers to provide a better pension but no job security. Nearly 98% of the 1,500 member United Aerospace Workers Local 1069 union who work at its military chopper plant in Ridley Park, PA voted in favor of a strike this week. The company said it could see a strike as soon as Saturday. Nationwide, union members have rejected the offer.
“So we will vote Boeing’s ‘last, best, and final’ offer,” said Tom Buffenbarger, IAM’s president and CEO. “And we will ask you to reject it, absolutely certain in the knowledge that a better one was—and is—available to you. We will ask you to give your negotiating team a resounding two-thirds strike authorization vote to strengthen their hand when Boeing is ready to resume talks, serious talks. It’s a hard way. It’s the old way. And obviously, it’s the only way Boeing understands.”
