Although the International Trade Commission (ITC) is not required to complete its review of the Section 201 steel tariffs until the midpoint of the program, a Concurrent Resolution urging President Bush to request an expedited review was introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday.
“These companies cannot afford to wait until September 2003,” said Chris Bates, president and CEO of the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). “If the current safeguard regime runs its three-year course, many of our member companies will be forced to source finished products from offshore facilities.”
MEMA is working with the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association and the Specialty Equipment Market Association to obtain relief for members affected by the program. Industry executives from the groups met recently with senators and representatives to provide individual testimonials detailing the impact of the tariffs on suppliers across the country. The resolution introduced yesterday included democratic and republican sponsors from Illinois, California, Louisiana, and Michigan.
