Two days before Boeing is set to release its third-quarter financial results, EasyJet has announced the section of Airbus over Boeing for its order of 120 A319 airplanes over five years.
EasyJet will also have options with price protection on another 120 A319s. EasyJet, which currently operates a fleet of more than 60 Boeing 737s, cited cost savings and maintenance programs as factors in the decision. The company said the Airbus A319 will be configured with 150 seats, with the possibility of increasing to 156, compared to 149 on the Boeing 737-700. “After exhaustive research and several rounds of negotiation with both Airbus and Boeing, the Board is convinced we have achieved a tremendous deal which will produce a step-change reduction in our cost base,” said Ray Webster, EasyJet CEO. “Airbus has demonstrated an enthusiasm to do business with us which is unmatched in my experience.”
