Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans and Assistant Secretary Maria Cino spent last Friday at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The plant is in the midst of a $600 million expansion to double production capacity to 160,000 vehicles per year. The secretary talked to team members and company officials about their view of the economy and the factory’s impact on the local economy. “DaimlerChrysler has added a boost of confidence to the state and local economy,” said Evans. “This is positive news that the Administration will focus on as it develops economic policies that will grow the economy and create new jobs for every American who wants a job.”
The expansion will double the workforce to 4,000, and the hiring process for additional workers is already under way in conjunction with the Alabama State Employment Service and the Alabama Development Training group. The majority of hiring will occur in 2004 and 2005.
