New NAM Chair Calls for Strong Leadership

The secret to good management—whether of a company or a country—is to build on strength, said the new chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers, Archie Dunham, at a National Press Club luncheon today.

“One of America’s greatest sources of strength is our vibrant, $10 trillion free-market economy,” Dunham said. “We sometimes forget that ours is not only the largest economy in the world, it is larger than the combined economies of our three closest rivals—Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.”

Dunham is chairman of the board of ConocoPhillips of Houston, Texas, the nation’s third largest energy company, and sixth in the world, with $75 billion in assets and 56,000 employees operating in 49 countries.

Dunham said exemplary ethical behavior was the trademark of the great majority of business leaders and key to the nation’s economic vigor, despite the highly-publicized scandals of the last year.

“The great majority of America’s business leaders are scrupulously honest, but the activities of a few dishonest CEOs have tarred us all with the same brush. It’s time to reassure the public that while individuals may occasionally fail, our overall system is sound,” he said, adding that companies with strong ethics policies should do more to tell their stories in public to help restore confidence in the economic system.
