The MoD has called for an audit of the £2 billion upgrade of the RAF’s fleet of maritime patrol aircraft.
The move follows BAE Systems’ announcement that it would have to delay the first flight of the Nimrod MRA4 because of strengthening work needed on the wings.
According to the Financial Times, a delay in the in-service date of 2005 would result in penalty payments for BAE Systems of around £46 million.
BAE Systems has described the setback as a ‘minor technical problem’. The result of the review is expected by the end of the year.
