A new device that will enable factory workers to have an extra set of eyes in the front of their head was rolled out by Westwood, Mass.-based MicroOptical last month.

The new model SV-3 Instrument Viewer is claimed by the company to be the first eyewear-mounted display for test and measurement applications. The Instrument Viewer is a hands-free, portable, color display that connects to test instruments such as oscilloscopes and flaw detectors. The patented combination of optics, electronics, and a microdisplay allows technicians to put color text and graphical images continuously in their field of view while they work. The large virtual image created by the viewer appears with no obstruction to vision so users can still focus on their work, enabling them to keep their eyes simultaneously on the product they are working on and a computer monitor.

Mark Spitzer, CEO of MicroOptical, said: “This innovative display will make technicians and engineers more productive, efficient, and comfortable performing their jobs.”

Mobile workers performing non-destructive testing with a flaw detector could also take advantage of the Instrument Viewer’s portable, lightweight displays in remote locations where it was difficult to set up a bulky monitor.

The viewer costs $995.
