The Institute for Supply Management (ISM), at the request of the Commerce Department, has evaluated the effects of the mid-November West Coast port stoppage.
After surveying 1,500 purchasing and supply management professionals, ISM reported that 41% said the situation disrupted their normal supply chain activity, 57% said it had no bearing on their operations, and several reported that they actually benefited. According to the respondents, damages included delayed, duplicated, or lost shipments of critical supplies; delayed shipments to customers; a switch from ocean shipments to air freight; and the redirection of shipments to ports in Canada, Mexico, and East and Gulf Coast ports.
