A device from Science Applications International (SAIC) allows technicians to receive information and instructions for repairs on military equipment via a PDA (personal digital assistant). The device was shown at last month’s Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference in Orlando.

The technology allows talking, palm-sized versions of the military’s technical manuals, complete with images, animation, and video, to be displayed on a PDA, according to SAIC. Procedures can be clearly illustrated, facilitating on-site maintenance or repairs. The technology also provides a wireless interface with inventory systems, so parts can be quickly located and ordered.

The specially equipped PDAs can also display detailed maps and topographical information so warfighters can perform detailed and realistic mission rehearsals in the field. “This wearable training represents the future,” said Bryan Cole, SAIC vice president and division manager. “Unlike the days when people had to travel to a few select sites to receive the training they needed, this puts the ability to train in the palms of their hands.”
