Small US manufacturers gain congressional support

The House Commerce, Justice, State, and the Judiciary Appropriations Committee introduced a bill requesting that $110 million be allocated in 2003 to The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program, according to the Modernization Forum, MEP’s trade association.

In addition, the Senate introduced an Omnibus Appropriations legislation that will provide $104.9 million for MEP in 2003. Although not yet finalized, these bills represent a level of support for the MEP program, which aims to stimulate the economy by promoting business exchange and protecting defense supply chains.

“We are very pleased by the Senate and House bills,” said Mike Wojcicki, president of the Modernization Forum. “MEP clients are doing better than the average small manufacturer. They’re increasing their productivity faster, and they’re adding jobs. That’s economic stimulus. What’s more, many of their clients make critical parts for missiles, fighter jets, tanks, warships—even tents and uniforms. MEP is hard at work for our economic recovery and our defense effort.”

In Spring 2002, a majority of House and Senate representatives signed a letter that stated “as the major suppliers to our nation’s large manufacturers, the competitiveness of our small manufacturers is vital to maintaining the supply chains for consumer and defense goods.”
