Tri-Star turns around ERP disaster

After a careful process involving 20 ERP vendors narrowed to three, from which a final selection was made, Tri-Star Plastics had to go back to its original, homegrown system.

“The implementation failed disastrously,” said Richard Cedrone, president of Tri-Star, of the ERP system. “They basically lied and tried to force us to go live on a system that didn’t work. We went almost eight months without financials.”

Cedrone said the hardest decision he ever had to make was what to do next. The company was essentially paralyzed working with the old system, which was designed for when the company was a $1.5 to $2 million distributor. It had since exceeded the $10 million mark, and Y2K was approaching.

Cedrone decided to go with a gut feeling this time. He had talked with Syspro a few years prior, but they were not able to support his needs at that time. “This time, they said they were ready. They flew two people out, and we had a meeting with them. I just got a good feeling. I took a shot and went with them, and it was the right decision,” said Cedrone.

A year ago, the company went live on Syspro’s general ledger, accounts payable, and customer database software. In August 2002, the entire system went live. “Syspro was there every step of the way,” said Cedrone. “If there was an issue, within an hour, they reprogrammed it and sent us new code.”

One of the largest benefits of Syspro’s system, according to Cedrone, is the ability to customize a solution that does not preclude implementing future upgrades. “They can do custom programs and keep them as a trigger point,” he said. “When they have upgrades, you can stay with their upgrade program. They’re really the only game in town that can do that.” In this case, the custom program allows automatic calculation of inventory and yield that Cedrone estimates saves the company $100,000 per year in worker time.
