Early Wednesday afternoon, a plastic factory in Kinston, North Carolina was the site of an explosion that killed three people and injured 37.
Approximately 130 people were at the West Pharmaceutical Services plant when it exploded. The cause of the explosion is unknown, but the plant, which made IV supplies and parts for medical syringes received 15 safety violation citations last October. A Kinston Public Safety Department official said the blast occurred in an area of the factory where chemicals are mixed. Eyewitnesses said the blast felt like an earthquake, and the fire in the most damaged part of the plant continued into early Thursday morning.
