Hyundai Automotive Group just broke ground for its first North American proving ground in California City, Calif.
The company is investing $50 million in building the 4,300-acre facility to be the test site for future Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Construction of the facility, the 6-mile oval track, the vehicle dynamics area, and several special surface roads will begin later this year, and the facility is scheduled to open in 2004.
“The US-based Hyundai/Kia Motors proving ground will ensure that future Hyundai and Kia vehicles are designed with the North American consumer in mind,” said Mong-Koo Chung, CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “Hyundai is committed to building on the momentum we’ve established in the US, and this state-of-the-art testing facility will help us do so.”
