Manufacturing output up in October

UK manufacturers experienced a sharp rise in output in October, beating analysts’ predictions, according to official data release by the Office for National Statistics yesterday.

A 0.6 per cent rise in output was double what had been forecast by leading economists and trade bodies and was the biggest monthly increase since March. Transport equipment, machinery and electrical goods contributed the most to the rise, although the food, drink and tobacco industries suffered a difficult month.

Year on year, output was 5.8 per cent higher in October than in the same month in 2009.
