Team UK celebrated yesterday as they took home a total of six medals and 17 medallions for excellence from Germany.
Four days of intense competition ran from the July 2nd-7th in the host town of Leipzig.
The UK came home with a grand total of 17 Medallions for Excellence, which are awarded to competitors who reach the world class standard in their skill.
Prime Minister David Cameron offered his congratulations to Team UK.
“British ambition and ingenuity has once again taken on and beaten the best in the world and I extend my congratulations to Team UK.
“As we compete in the global race, this Government is on the side of ambitious young people who want to work hard and get on and we will continue in our efforts to build the biggest and best apprenticeship programme.”
Ben Tullett, 22, Bronze Medalist in Aircraft Maintenance, wanted his and Team UK’s achievements at WorldSkills to be an example to young people that they can have a future from apprenticeships.
“To win Bronze in Aircraft Maintenance is just amazing. The last few months have been really tough fitting my training for WorldSkills around work and family responsibilities but it has been totally worth it. I want to show the UK how apprenticeships and vocational training can enable young people to gain a real qualification and a real future.”
Skills minister Matthew Hancock said the UK was working hard to make sure young people go into apprenticeships or university when they finish school.
“Congratulations to Team UK on their fantastic achievements at WorldSkills. They have played a hugely important role in promoting the importance and value of vocational skills and practical learning to young people, their parents and employers.
“In Germany where Team UK have competed the majority of teenagers either go to university or into an apprenticeship after they finish their exams. Through our reforms and investment in the apprenticeship programme we are working hard to make this a reality here.”
Korea topped the final medals table with 12 golds as well as winning the Manufacturing Team Challenge.
