Ian Murray MP

Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment

Ian Murray was elected as Member of Parliament for Edinburgh South at the General Election in May 2010. He initially served on House of Common’s Business, Innovation and Skills and Environmental Audit Select Committees. He also acted as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Ivan Lewis MP, the then Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

In September 2011, Ian was invited to join the Shadow Business, Innovation and Skills team as Shadow Minister for Employment Relations, Consumer and Postal Affairs and following the reshuffle in October 2013, he was promoted to Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment.  He remains the Party’s spokesperson on employment relations and postal matters.

Ian studied Social Policy and Law at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an Honours degree at the age of 20 and went on to work in pensions management following his graduation.  He was then head hunted by an Edinburgh-based internet television station, and later took the step to set-up his own event management business, which saw him run the largest arts festival in Europe for seven years.   He has also been involved in the hospitality trade, having renovated and operated three establishments during the last six years with his partner, Hannah.  Before entering Parliament, Ian was a City Councillor in Edinburgh from May 2003 to August 2010.
