John Howie

Managing Director (Marine), Babcock International Group

John was appointed Managing Director – Marine in September 2010. He is responsible for Babcock’s submarine, warship and naval base management businesses at Devonport, Rosyth, Faslane and Appledore as well as the company’s submarine deep maintenance operations in Canada. His role includes delivery of the Company’s commitments under the 15 year Terms of Business Agreement with the MoD and the company’s role in the delivery of the new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy.

John joined Babcock International Group in April 2001 as Managing Director of Babcock Naval Services Ltd, where he led the team which secured a £400million contract to provide specialist support services at HMNB Clyde. The success of this contract resulted in the award of PPP/PFI of the Year 2003 in Scotland and the award of an early extension of the contract in 2005 valued at £425m.

Following the creation of Babcock Marine in 2007, John was appointed Managing Director – Warships with responsibility for support to the Royal Navy surface fleet and for Babcock’s role in the future Aircraft Carrier project. John was also responsible for business integration in Babcock Marine and for executive development and health and safety leadership across Babcock Group.

John was appointed Chief Executive of Babcock International Group’s Rail division in June 2009.  The division is a UK focused railway infrastructure support business, selected as one of only four track renewal contractors to Network Rail.

In addition to his role at Babcock, John is Chairman of Scottish Enterprise’s Aerospace, Defence and Marine Industry Leadership Group, a member of the Advisors Board for Strathclyde University Business School, a member of the CBI Council in Scotland, a Director of the Society of Maritime Industries and a member of Scottish Engineering’s Executive Committee.
