NEW database-as-a-service offering powers IoT and machine data applications with the industry’s most scalable database, CrateDB, and the integration simplicity of Microsoft Azure.
Crate.io, developer and provider of the industry’s leading database for machine data and Internet of Things (IoT) applications at scale, has announced the availability of CrateDB Cloud as a managed service via Microsoft Azure. CrateDB Cloud on Azure is a highly scalable SQL Database-as-a-Service managed 24/7 by Crate.io. The integration enables Azure customers to easily and cost-effectively implement real-time backends for Industrial IoT applications, ranging from small gigabyte data streams to massive terabyte applications.
Digital transformation fueled by the IoT and machine data requires the ingestion, storage, processing and analysis of large amounts of data in real time. CrateDB is a distributed and highly scalable SQL database optimized for handling complex time-series data. By utilizing Crate.io’s database-as-a-service, manufacturers can focus employees’ attention on making smart use of that data to meaningfully improve factory operations and identify issues before they arise – and not need to devote time and personnel to manage the database.
The full integration of CrateDB Cloud in Azure offers a number of benefits for Microsoft Azure users. Massive amounts of data can be decentrally captured and queried in real time, with maximum reliability and availability. The service can also be flexibly adapted to individual application scenarios by adjusting performance to the actual workload at the touch of a button. Costs are incurred only for the services actually used, which guarantees a high degree of flexibility and transparency. This can enable 10x cost savings compared to other time-series databases. Billing is done directly via Azure.
The CrateDB Cloud on Azure is ANSI SQL-compatible, making it easy to use and integrate with custom applications. Dynamic schemas and the sophisticated JSON handling (JavaScript Object Notation) make the database ideal for use even with especially heavy IIoT time-series data workloads. Through the comprehensive visualization and monitoring of all data, actions required to control and optimize production can be triggered in real time, resulting in improved efficiency of the entire process. The interfaces provided to Azure IoT Hubs, Event Hubs or PowerBI ensure seamless integration with Azure IoT.
The availability of the CrateDB Cloud on Azure opens up a wide range of use cases, from data storage to comprehensive IoT projects: extensive amounts of data from a large number of devices and sensors can be recorded, stored and visualized in a dashboard in real time. The dashboard can be used by a wide variety of users to individualize the information in terms of area and time frame. Monitoring and alerting allow problems to be identified and resolved before they affect the process. The continuous storage of data offers the possibility to create ‘Data Lakes’ that can then be used for future applications. In addition, parameter changes in real time can be used to implement calculation-heavy use cases in order to immediately trigger data-supported actions.
“More than 1,600 companies around the world trust CrateDB for their IoT and machine data applications,” said Christian Lutz, Co-founder & CEO, Crate.io. “Our customers and independent analysts such as Gartner and Forbes recognize the unique selling points around CrateDB’s performance-at-scale, ease of implementation, and cost efficiency. With new availability on the Azure Marketplace and the comprehensive integration into the Microsoft Cloud offering, we are now providing a much larger circle of users with a simple and cost-effective entry into the future of industrial data usage.”
