RIS keeps security on track at Bombardier

Leading integrated security specialist, Rutledge Integrated Systems (RIS) has completed a sophisticated CCTV installation for Bombardier Transportation UK as part of a major security upgrade at its Derby rail plant.

The Litchurch Lane factory manufactures a wide range of rolling stock including rail vehicles and total transit systems and the company specified a high definition CCTV system that could capture images from specific areas of interest across the site, including the manufacturing sheds.

RIS has completed the installation of a large number of 10 megapixel high definition IP cameras, a third of which use a wireless transmission where traditional cabling isn’t feasible. The networkable day/night fixed cameras are capable of delivering round the clock surveillance and unrivalled quality of images with the ability to capture facial recognition of at least 60 metre distance.

The installation has also included a highly powerful and effective network video management solution. It is able to support a wide range of multi-megapixel IP cameras and at Bombardier its array of multiple servers are able to process all CCTV information and store the images to hard drives.

Completing the installation is an Enterprise software package that allows the camera images to be viewed on everything from a 42″ HD monitor to a hand-held PDA and remotely monitored from any location within the plant.

This entire system offers simultaneous live view of all areas of the factory, record and playback facilities and powerful search tools that enable recorded events to be explored and any particular incident quickly found and acted upon.

Iain Cameron, managing director of video management system software provider, Mirasys UK said: “Mirasys was keen to work with Rutledge on this project as it provided an excellent showcase for how to deliver a solution involving large numbers of high megapixel cameras on a single site.”

Commenting on the project, Bombardier Transportation’s services director, Mark Fenn said: “Our Derby manufacturing site had very specific security requirements at the heart of which was the need for an HD CCTV system that could provide long range facial recognition capabilities.

“Customised to the needs of our factory, the solution that RIS has designed and installed is at the leading edge of CCTV technology and is by far the most sophisticated system I’ve ever seen.”
