Tornado Wire’s Rebecca Galley reflected on the company’s success in winning the Achieving Customer Value Award at last year’s Manufacturer MX Awards, sharing insights from her keynote on what leading manufacturers understand about delivering value to customers.
Her presentation centred on three key principles: knowing your customer, scientifically understanding what they value and recognising that customer value is everyone’s responsibility across the organisation.
Looking back on Tornado Wire’s award-winning entry, Rebecca emphasised that the achievement was the result of a company-wide commitment rather than the efforts of any one individual. She explained that customer value is deeply embedded throughout the business, extending far beyond the sales team. While Tornado Wire has the expected customer-facing functions and systems, its real strength lies in how customer insight is shared and transformed into meaningful actions that benefit both the company and its customers.
A major theme of the discussion was leadership’s role in maintaining a customer-focused culture. Rebecca described herself as a “guardian” of that culture, ensuring the customer remains front of mind in every decision. Through regular communication, cross-functional collaboration and opportunities for factory teams and sales staff to interact, Tornado Wire is dedicated to connecting every employee to the end customer.
Rebecca also argued that operational excellence and customer value are not competing priorities but rather, are complementary. Product quality, reliability, strong relationships and efficient operations all contribute directly to delivering value. Customer research conducted as part of the awards process reinforced this message, showing that customers valued quality, service and relationships more than price alone. These insights have helped the business focus conversations on value rather than cost.
Looking ahead, Rebecca believes emerging technologies such as AI, automation and advanced maintenance solutions will play an even more important role in manufacturing. However, she stressed that strong relationships, collaboration and people will remain at the heart of success.
Our customers are telling us that they value quality, relationships and how we treat them. Hearing that means that we’re having different conversations; ones that are more about value and less about price.
