Bisley is best known for its steel filing cabinets, but as the world becomes increasingly digital, the company has been forced to rethink what workplace storage and furniture mean today.
With over 94 years of history as a family-owned manufacturer, Bisley has evolved significantly from its roots as a pure steel office storage producer. At its peak, the business manufactured around 20,000 tonnes of steel storage annually. Today, that figure has reduced to around 7,000 tonnes, reflecting the decline of paper filing and the impact of digitalisation.
Rather than standing still, Bisley has actively diversified. Over recent years, the company has expanded into wood manufacturing, mixed-material products that combine steel and wood, and, around the time of Covid, new sales channels. This diversification also included the acquisition of a seating manufacturer in Ireland, enabling Bisley to broaden its offering beyond traditional storage.
The changing nature of the workplace has been a major driver of this transformation. As organisations encourage people back into offices, there is growing demand for flexible spaces, open-plan layouts, zoning, and environments that feel more like home. Colour, design, and technology now play a key role in creating offices that support staff wellbeing and retention. Trends such as biophilic design, which introduces greenery into workspaces, and the use of mixed materials align closely with Bisley’s evolving strengths.
Looking ahead, Bisley’s ambition is to move beyond being seen solely as an office furniture manufacturer. The company plans to continue expanding into materials such as laminates, plastics, upholstery, and soft furnishings, allowing it to contribute to a much larger portion of a workspace scheme.
At the same time, Bisley is focused on strengthening its online, B2B, B2C, and trade sales channels. Rather than pursuing innovation for its own sake, the company’s priority is clear: delivering products that meet current customer needs while adapting confidently to the modern world of work.
