AB InBev invited us to Magor Brewery back in March, where beers such as Stella, Budweiser, Corona, Bud Light and more recently Camen Hells, are all made.
We take you behind the scenes at one of the UK’s most significant breweries to see how innovation, sustainability, and major investment are shaping the future of beer production in Wales.
Magor Brewery has long benefited from strong support from the local Welsh government, receiving financial backing and policy guidance that have helped the site grow into a true brewing powerhouse. Over the years, this support has fuelled not only expansion, but a major shift toward greener, more responsible production.
One of the biggest steps forward is Magor’s push to eliminate plastic from its packaging. The team has successfully removed plastic rings from cans and replaced plastic wrap around multipacks, making their packaging fully plastic-free. And that’s just the beginning of their sustainability mission. The brewery also brews Budweiser using 100% renewable electricity. To make that possible, AB InBev installed one of the UK’s largest on-site wind turbines, while also committing to 100% British barley for Budweiser brewed at Magor.
Inside the plant, cutting-edge technology is transforming efficiency. The site now houses the world’s largest wort cooler—capable of chilling an incredible three million pints a day. Covering an area the size of a football pitch, it’s four times bigger than a standard cooler and even recaptures heat for reuse.
But these improvements didn’t happen overnight. A decade ago, Magor wasn’t attracting global investment due to inefficiencies and underperformance. Through dedication and major operational changes, the team turned things around, proving the site could deliver real returns and long-term value for the community and the company. In recent years, investment has accelerated. New valve systems, upgraded mains, and larger fermenters have boosted both speed and quality—essential as new brands and longer fermentation times are introduced.
