Can we build a car that could run for 100 years without refuelling?

If your car was powered by thorium, you would never need to refuel it, according to US-based company Laser Power Systems.

The vehicle would burn out long before the chemical did with the thorium itself likely to outlive the car’s owner.

Laser Power Systems has created a concept for a thorium-powered car engine. The element is radioactive, and the team uses bits of it to build a laserbeam that heats water, produces steam, and powers an energy-producing turbine. Cadillac has also been working on alternative fuel cars and has created the Cadillac Word Thorium Fuel concept or WTF for short.

The Manufacturer is hosting a one day conference titled Innovation Through Technology on 11 June 2014.

This one day conference will delve into the heart of two concepts that will change almost every aspect of manufacturing, from product development through to after sales servicing: Industry 4.0; and the Internet of Things. Click here to find out more.
