Meet Liam, the iPhone destroyer and facilitator of Apple Renew

Although iPhones are still for the most part put together by hand, after three years of work, Apple engineers have designed a robot that capable of taking them apart.

Liam, which is a robotic system comprised of 29 separate arms, is able to detect parts within the device and strip them out safely and efficiently so they can be refurbished.

Reportedly able to disassemble up to 350 iPhones an hour, Apple is looking to increase Liam’s supply of old iPhones to take apart with a new recycling program called Apple Renew.

As a part of Apple Renew, you can send your old Apple devices in to be recycled and you’ll get a gift card back with what Apple determines to be the value of the device.
