170 jobs at risk due to GPI factory closure

Graphic Packaging International (GPI) has announced it will close its Gillingham factory, resulting in the loss of 170 jobs.

The announcement comes just six months after the packaging company acquired the site from rivals Contego Packaging.

Trade union Unite is demanding an urgent meeting with GPI and confirmed it has already started a 45 day consultation period with the company.

Unite national officer Ian Tonks said: “This is a very difficult time for the workforce and they have a right to be angry that they face redundancy. Unite will be demanding the company does everything possible to support the workers affected.

At a time when unemployment is high and good jobs are hard to find, employers should be going out of their way to find the best deal possible for workers who have given years of loyalty.”

GPI are proposing to cease operations at the Gillingham site by the end of September.
