A day of speed, STEM and space

It’s not every day you meet someone who has been to space.

On a scorching July day, I headed to the Goodwood Festival of Speed with my colleague and F1 superfan, Chloe Rouse, from our Smart Manufacturing Week marketing team. We’re used to exhibitions, but the scale of this festival was something else!

Between vintage Formula 1 cars roaring down the track and every team’s merch imaginable, Chloe was in her element. But we had a mission: to visit Goodwood’s FOS Future Lab and meet a STEM ambassador.

The Future Lab was bursting with innovations in AI, clean energy and space tech and at its centre was Tim Peake, the first official British astronaut to walk in space. Just casually chatting with visitors while I melted in the sunshine.

I had the chance to sit down with Tim one-on-one to talk about why STEM events matter so much for inspiring the next generation of engineers and technologists and why being an ambassador is so important.

As we left, I thought to myself I didn’t ask him about what it was like in space. It felt like the most obvious questions, but maybe one he hears too often…

So now I’m left wondering: Should I have asked? Anyway, next time I bump into an astronaut at a car festival, I’ll have my question ready.
