EADS has achieved a substantial profit for the first quarter of 2008 thanks to the success of its aircraft manufacturing unit Airbus.

The company reported a net three month profit of 285 million euros (£227 million, $440 million), compared to the 10 million euro loss it suffered in the first quarter of 2007.

Louis Gallois, chief executive of EADS, described the results as “encouraging”, adding that “though many serious challenges have been overcome there remains much to do in order to secure the significant and lasting improvement in operational performance we are targeting.”
