Amgen has announced plans to invest an additional $300m into its U.S. manufacturing network, strengthening domestic biologics production and expanding operations at its major manufacturing site in Puerto Rico.

The investment will support increased production capacity, the deployment of next-generation manufacturing technologies and efforts to secure reliable medicine supply for patients globally.

The funding will be directed toward the company’s biologics manufacturing facility in Juncos, Puerto Rico, one of the world’s largest biomanufacturing sites. Established in 1992, the facility produces biologic medicines distributed to more than 60 countries and plays a central role in Amgen’s global manufacturing network.

According to the company, the expansion will help strengthen advanced manufacturing roles on the island, support workforce development initiatives and create hundreds of construction jobs during the build phase.

Robert Bradway, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Amgen, said the latest investment reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to American manufacturing.

“Amgen has been a leader in U.S. biomanufacturing for decades, and this expansion reflects our continued commitment to American manufacturing,” he said.

“By growing our operations in Puerto Rico, we are ensuring patients have access to the medicines they need, investing in the long-term strength of our domestic supply chain and supporting American jobs.”

The announcement forms part of a broader expansion strategy across the United States. Over the past year, Amgen has unveiled plans to invest $650m in Puerto Rico, $900m in Ohio and $600m in a new science and innovation centre in California. The company has also invested more than $1.5bn in North Carolina.

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González-Colón described the move as further evidence of the territory’s growing role in advanced manufacturing.

“This investment confirms that the policies we have implemented are working,” she said.

“Puerto Rico has more than 60 years of excellence in the biopharmaceutical sector, supported by a highly skilled workforce and world-class infrastructure.”

Sebastián Negrón Reichard, Secretary of Puerto Rico’s Department of Economic Development and Commerce, said the latest commitment highlights confidence in the island’s manufacturing capabilities.

“Amgen’s additional $300m commitment in Juncos is a powerful signal that the future of American biomanufacturing is being built here,” he said.

“Combined with the $650m previously announced, this represents nearly $1bn in confidence in our workforce, our capabilities and our ability to produce life-saving medicines.”

Amgen said it has invested more than $40bn in manufacturing and research and development in the United States since 2017, underlining the company’s continued focus on domestic innovation and production capacity.
