Premier Foods has confirmed it is to invest £20m into a new production and packaging facility in South Yorkshire in a move to safeguard jobs and double capacity.

The factory, based in Barnsley, will see the introduction of a new line capable of producing 300 million cake slices a year.

It will also secure the futures of the site’s 680 permanent workers and will see the installation of a mixing station, oven and robotics over the next 12 months.

Jason Ramsay, factory general manager for the Carlton site, said: “This investment is a strong vote of confidence by Premier Foods in the Carlton site and the Carlton workforce. This latest news is a huge boost for all of us.”

The news follows speculation that the embattled food company, reported to have debts of £1.3bn, is poised to sell its Hovis bread brand to Californian private equity company Gores Group.
