The UK automotive market relapsed into recessionary trends in July with new registrations falling 8.9 per cent, month on month.

The recovery of the UK automotive market stalled in July with new registrations falling 8.9 per cent, month on month.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says it is the first monthly fall since October 2009.

For the year though, registrations are still up by 41.7% compared with 2009.

SMMT chief executive said July’s drop was to be expected, considering the end of various scrappage schemes around the world, and that the yearly figures are very positive.

“Whilst we expect some challenging conditions, economic growth has returned in all major markets around the world,” he said.

Production of engines fell by 3.4% in July but is up by 28.7% over the first six months of this year compared with last.

Meanwhile, SMMT has released a report on the “potentially untapped resource that is the Brazilian automotive market. The organisation says there are strong market conditions in the country and is offering advice to companies that want to move or establish manufacturing operations there.
