An annual list of the best employers for returning US war veterans has been released this week.

The Best for Vets: Employers 2015 rankings were compiled by the Military Times.

The military news site invited companies across the US to take part in their 90 question survey to ascertain the best employers for war veterans.

Overall rankings were based on the answers companies provided, and were formulated on key factors that make a company a good fit for veterans, such as recruitment of people connected to the military, company policies relating to veterans and their families, and the culture of the company.

Tele-communications company Verizon topped this year’s list on the back of four star ratings in factors such as veterans on-boarding, company training about military and military spouse policies.

Other companies to feature in the top-ten the best employers for war veterans included: defence and aerospace companies Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems; insurance companies USAA and Humana; banking and financial services’ Charles Schwab, Capital One Financial, JP Morgan Chase; engineering and services company Intuitive Research and Technology; and tele-communications company AT&T.

This year’s survey unearthed some positive statistics, with 97% of responding companies reporting having a current service member, veteran or military spouse among its top leaders.

A overwhelming majority (98%) of the companies surveyed said they attended military job fairs at an average of 39 events per year.

Manager of military relations and strategic sourcing for talent acquisition at Lockheed Martin, Teri Matzkin, said veterans were highly sought after in the current workforce.

“They bring skills and talent that we desperately need,” he said. “Now the competition is even more intense for this type of talent, we must continue to look for every means to attract and retain them.”

Top ranked company for veterans, Verizon, currently employs over 11,000 veterans and runs programs to help the transition from the military to the workforce.
