BMW has announced plans to invest $750million (£373 million) in increasing its industrial presence in the United States.
The company’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant is to be the beneficiary of the investment, with hopes to increase production there from 160,000 to 240,000 units by 2012.
The plans are likely to create 500 new jobs at the facility, which is to produce the BMW X3, X5 and X6 models for the international marketplace.
“The boost in production capacity will positively impact the logistics, suppliers and distribution networks that support the manufacturing process,” explained president of BMW Manufacturing Josef Kerscher.
The move has, however, been driven by a significant loss of jobs in Germany, with BMW planning to shed 7.5 per cent of its native workforce.
