America’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has instructed aerospace manufacturer Boeing to carry out investigations into the security of computer systems in its 787 aircraft.
The ruling has come as a result of concerns that passengers may be able to hack into the systems and take control of the aeroplane and was first reported in trade publication Flight International.
Boeing said it was holding continued discussion with the FAA in relation to the situation. “We have already reached agreement with the FAA on the documentation, analysis and demonstrations necessary to show compliance with this special condition,” the company explained, adding: “Completion of these activities will occur during the test flight programme.”
Test flight results are to be made readily available to the FAA during reviews of the systems.
