Manufacturing and engineering demand precision, problem-solving and creativity. These are some of the same skills that make a great guitarist and that’s what the Guitar Legends competition at Smart Manufacturing Week 2025 is all about.
Engineers and musicians share a deep-rooted connection, whether it’s the physics of sound or the precision of a perfectly executed solo. From Brian May’s astrophysics to Tom Scholz’s mechanical engineering expertise, technical minds have long shaped some of the greatest music.
From the 4-5 of June 2025 at the NEC Birmingham, manufacturers and engineers with a passion for music will battle it out, each performing the intro to a classic track. The prize is a state-of-the-art 3D-printed guitar. One winner will be crowned each day, with the first-day champion earning the chance to perform with The Shadow Monkeys at the networking party.
This isn’t just about musical talent; it’s a celebration of the cutting-edge innovation that drives modern manufacturing. The competition’s 3D-printed guitars not only showcase the precision required in engineering but also highlight the creative possibilities that advanced technology brings to both music and manufacturing.
Guitar Legends is a chance to see another side of the engineering community, where technical expertise meets raw creativity.
