International manufacturer of branded grocery products, AB World Foods showed the power of collaboration to claim silver in the final of a global supply chain competition.

The company behind Patak’s, Blue Dragon and Levi Roots flew the flag for the UK in The Fresh Connection final and came a close second behind France’s Essilor Crizal.

The performance in the global final in Amsterdam was the best ever by a British team in a competition that featured more than 100 teams from across the world.

The company’s ‘Juiced in Time’ team won the UK & Ireland final after forming partnerships with other companies to drive down costs and open up new international markets.

They formed collaborative agreements to share logistics providers and to jointly licence new manufacturing technology with the likes of Collect+; Kimberly-Clark; Mondelez International; XPO Logistics, and Unilever.

The Fresh Connection is a global professional challenge in which teams have to turn around a failing juice manufacturing company by aligning corporate strategy with operational decision making.

The aim of the competition is to develop skills and experience in leadership and sales & operational planning (S&OP).

This year was the first where companies could benefit by cooperating in the competition and it proved such a success that Supply Chain Collaboration has been made the official theme for 2016.

Cross-company teams featuring customers, suppliers and logistics providers are now being actively encouraged in a bid to foster supply chain innovation and collaboration.

The UK event is supported by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, the Food Storage and Distribution Federation and Toyota MHE.

SCALA managing director, John Perry, noted that AB World’s success showed the power of both internal and external collaboration.

He explained: “Working effectively across internal departments and externally with supply chain partners cuts costs, improves routes to market and drives efficiency.

“SCALA undertakes a significant amount of work helping companies collaborate and I’m very pleased that The Fresh Connection business simulation now supports this best practice way of working.”
