Collapse of UK’s only abrasive manufacturer triggers major asset sale

The collapse of Phoenix Naylors Abrasives has brought an end to what is understood to be the UK’s only domestic producer of certain grinding wheel and abrasive products, prompting concerns over the loss of specialist manufacturing capability.

The Chesterfield-based company, founded in 1968, has ceased trading following the appointment of joint administrators from KR8 Advisory Limited. The business specialised in the production of grinding wheels and abrasive components, including those used in rail track maintenance.

End of a niche UK manufacturing capability

Phoenix Naylors’ demise leaves a notable gap in the UK’s engineering supply chain, with the company believed to be the sole remaining domestic manufacturer of its kind. Its closure raises questions about reliance on overseas suppliers for critical abrasive products used across industries such as rail, fabrication and heavy engineering.

The company had built up decades of expertise in abrasive manufacturing processes, operating a facility equipped with specialist machinery and materials tailored to the sector.

Major auction of plant and equipment

Following the administration, Landwood Group has been instructed to oversee the sale of more than 1,000 lots of plant, machinery and stock through a large-scale online auction.

The sale includes a wide range of general engineering equipment, such as CNC lathes, vertical borers and turret mills, alongside hydraulic presses, mixers, ovens and specialist abrasive production systems. Also available are grit-dispensing systems, curing ovens, testing equipment and a significant volume of grinding wheel moulds.

Substantial stocks of raw materials, including ceramic alumina, silicon carbide, zirconia and binding resins, are also being offered, along with handling equipment such as forklifts, cranes, compressors and dust extraction systems.

“The collapse sadly marks the end of a long-running manufacturing operation in the region. At the same time, the sale offers the market access to a wide range of industrial equipment and materials from a once well-established supplier.”

Opportunity amid decline

Parkinson added that the auction presents a rare opportunity for manufacturers to acquire specialist assets linked to abrasive production and heavy industrial processes.

“This is a substantial and diverse sale, reflecting the scale and capability of the operation,” he said. “For businesses operating in engineering, fabrication or abrasive manufacturing, this is an opportunity to secure high-quality assets at competitive prices.”

Viewing of the assets is taking place in Chesterfield, with the online auction set to close on 29 April.

While the sale may benefit buyers in the short term, the closure of Phoenix Naylors Abrasives marks a significant loss for UK manufacturing, particularly in a niche yet essential segment of the industrial supply chain.
