Consumer slowdown hits brewing industry

Greene King and Fuller have both been experiencing increasingly difficult trading conditions due to a consumer slowdown.

Michael Turner, chairman of Fuller, explained: “Since the half year, the slowdown in consumer spending and input price inflation, on top of the smoking ban, have made operating conditions more challenging.” While Greene King said that it expected “the rest of the year to remain challenging.”

However, both brewers reassured investors that full-year profits would still be within market expectations.
