Enginuity Skills Awards 2024 shortlist announced

Enginuity, the charity dedicated to closing skills gaps in UK engineering and manufacturing, has announced the shortlist for this year’s Enginuity Skills Awards.

Alstom set to mothball Derby plant over HS2 order delays

French train maker Alstom has put the UK government on notice that it is planning to mothball its historic factory in Derby that employs 1,300 people after delays in orders for the High Speed 2 line.

The plant, which Alstom acquired in its 2021 takeover of Canada’s Bombardier, does not have enough work to keep functioning normally in the coming years, in part because of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to cancel the northern part of the project from Birmingham to Manchester. All-new Mini Cooper goes into production in the UK

The first fifth generation MINI Cooper has been manufactured at Plant Oxford, the home of MINI.

The first three-door model was driven off the production line by Charlie Cooper, grandson of the legendary John Cooper, whose heritage inspired the Cooper moniker.

The new MINI Cooper is the latest generation to be built in the UK, with all three BMW Group UK manufacturing sites contributing to production. More via Automotive Blog

C&C Fabrications announces facility refurbishment

C&C Fabrications (C&C), a leading provider of bespoke metal fabrication services, has announced a significant refurbishment of its headquarters in Ferrybridge, Yorkshire, to increase its operational capacity and efficiency amid continuous growth.

C&C is undertaking a comprehensive upgrade of its facilities, with a particular focus on expanding its powder coating workshop and modernising its office space. More via The Manufacturer

UK funding of £14m for open-access power semiconductor test & packaging equipment

The UK Government has announced a £16.6m investment to give semiconductor researchers and businesses access to new equipment helping them to test and make chips for use in high-energy machines such as electric vehicles and manufacturing equipment. Of the funding, £14m is targeted particularly at semiconductors used in power electronics.

The new tools, based predominantly in Newcastle and Strathclyde, will help researchers and businesses of all sizes to test applications of new innovations in power electronics and to improve their semiconductor packaging processes. More via Semiconductor Today

How a wine bottle made out of paper is winning over UK supermarkets

UK Steel Manufacturer Secures Major Contract for Energy Infrastructure

Liberty Steel recently won a contract to supply pipelines from its Hartlepool steel manufacturing site in the United Kingdom for energy infrastructure and carbon-capture projects.

Liberty’s parent company, GFG Alliance, said in a March 15 statement that Liberty Pipes Hartlepool (LPH), located in northeast England, will supply onshore and offshore pipes to the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) and Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power). More via OilPrice.com
