Battery-electric Tevva truck set to drive skills at Mira Technology Institute (MTI)
Students and apprentices at the MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) have welcomed the delivery of a brand-new electric truck to help them get to grips with the latest electric vehicle technology.
The 7.5 tonne Tevva battery electric truck is based at the MTI’s state-of-the-art workshops and will be instantly accessible for every student enabling them to see how the technology works in practice. More via The Manufacturer
October new car market beats pre-pandemic levels but subdued EV growth hinders green goals
October’s new car market grew by 14.3% to reach 153,529 registrations, 7.2% above pre-pandemic levels and marking the best performance for the month since 2018, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The 15th month of consecutive growth was driven almost entirely by large fleet registrations, which grew 28.8% to reach 87,479 units. Private demand was stable at 62,915 vehicles, a 0.3% increase, while the much smaller business sector saw registrations fall -15.2% to 3,135 units. With the sustained increase in new car registrations, overall vehicle uptake is now up 19.6% in the first 10 months, with the market currently enjoying its best year since 2019. More via SMMT
GKN Aerospace and GE sign major agreement on industry-leading aero engines
GKN Aerospace and GE have deepened their long-term partnership on a series of industry-leading engines including the GEnx programme, the fastest-selling high-thrust engine. The new agreement focuses on three key areas: new technology insertion, fan case production and assembly, and repair of high volume, complex engines structures.
The ground-breaking technology insertion programmes on the GEnx will focus on alternative material solutions, providing a more sustainable manufacturing footprint for several products currently flying. GKN Aerospace will provide component design expertise as well as its latest technologies, to help drive the GEnx programme towards its targets on carbon emissions reduction targets and cost reduction. Engineering community unites for Tomorrow’s Engineers Week
Yesterday marked the first day of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2023 (6 to 10 November 2023) – a week-long celebration of engineering and technology careers designed to excite and inspire the next generation.
Now entering its 11th year, the annual celebration will see employers, professional engineering institutions, schools and individuals working in engineering and tech come together to bring diverse engineering careers to life for young people.
This year Tomorrow’s Engineers Week aims to reach over 50,000 students during the week. It’s a unique opportunity for the engineering and technology sector to help students explore the alignment of their skills and passions with the world of engineering and to shine a light on inspirational engineers and technicians, reshaping young people’s perceptions of the industry. Space age manufacturing to boost frontline support
Technology used in radars and frontline battlefield communications could be manufactured in space, after an injection of funding to a British company.
Space Forge, based in South Wales, is building the world’s first in-space manufacturing platform that can be returned back to Earth and has been awarded £499,000 as part of a collaborative project with Northrop Grumman under the MOD’s Defence Technology Exploitation Programme (DTEP).
With multiple benefits, materials manufactured in space are especially pure because of access to extreme temperatures and lack of contamination. More via GOV UK
100,000 and counting: Amazon Filters passes production milestone
A UK process filter manufacturer has fabricated and shipped its 100,000th stainless steel cartridge housing after production capacity was boosted through an extensive, ongoing investment programme.
Surrey-based Amazon Filters hit the milestone figure as the latest practical output of its ‘quick and able’ manufacturing ethos.
The 100,000th unit, a metal fabricated housing like the others in the count, was produced and shipped in response to an order from a global water treatment company. More via The Manufacturer
Tesla to build 25,000-euro car in Germany – source
Tesla plans to build a 25,000-euro ($26,838) car at its factory near Berlin, a source with knowledge of the matter said on Monday, in a long-awaited development for the electric vehicle maker which is aiming for mass uptake of its cars.
The source, who declined to be named, did not say when production would begin. More via Reuters
JCB supports men’s community group with tool donation
An East Staffordshire men’s community group is celebrating the next step in building a toolkit to tackle loneliness and isolation – thanks to support from JCB.
Rocester and District Men’s Shed has taken delivery of £500 worth of tools to enable members to practise DIY and woodworking skills at their weekly get-togethers. The group’s ten members travel from Ashbourne, Uttoxeter, Stramshall and Denstone, to meet each Wednesday morning for cuppas, chats and making and mending sessions.
The Men’s Shed movement is an international organisation founded in Australia to bring men together for making and repairing goods, but mainly for companionship – whether they are retired, unemployed or have disabilities. More via JCB
