Construction begins on BAE Systems’ new £12m shipbuilding academy in Glasgow
Construction has begun on a new Applied Shipbuilding Academy at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun shipyard on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow.
The Academy will comprise of a Modern Trade Hall and a Flexible Learning Hub. The Academy will support the development of the entire workforce, from apprentices to senior leaders, and forms part of the Company’s ongoing commitment to develop future talent. More via The Manufacturer

EVA Air places landmark order with Airbus
Taiwan’s EVA Air has finalised a firm order with Airbus for the purchase of 18 long-range A350-1000s and 15 single-aisle A321neo. This sees the airline become the latest global carrier to select the A350-1000 for its future long haul requirements. In addition, the A321neo aircraft will bring new levels of efficiency for the carrier’s regional network. More via Airbus
Boohoo considers closing UK factory it set up to improve workers’ treatment
The fast fashion company Boohoo is considering closing a factory that it set up in Leicester as a model for its efforts to improve the treatment of workers making its clothing.
The struggling online retailer is consulting with up to 100 workers at the site two years after it was opened to great fanfare with the intention of using it for “supplier learning and development”, creating 170 jobs. More via The Guardian
UK manufacturing firm continues acquisitive growth with US deal
Hill & Smith Holdings, a manufacturing firm headquartered in Solihull, has continued its M&A-driven growth with the acquisition of a company based in New Jersey, USA. The company has acquired Capital Steel Service, LLC, a supplier of structural steel products based in Trenton. More via Business Sale Report
Prime Minister tours VEKA’s Burnley manufacturing facility
Prime minister Rishi Sunak was given a guided tour of VEKA plc’s premises in Burnley where he learned more about the future of the UK manufacturing.
The tour was organised by Burnley MP and Lancashire Business View contributor Antony Higginbotham. VEKA is one of the town’s largest employers. More via Lancashire Business View

New investor injects funds into UK cat food manufacturer
UK cat food producer KatKin has secured a new investor, Active Partners. The investment firm is joining the company’s existing rooster of backers which includes Perwyn, V3 Ventures (Verlinvest) and Octopus Ventures.
KatKin said in a statement that its vet-formulated fresh food uses real meat that is gently cooked with the aim to lock in nutrients and flavor, and is subsequently frozen fresh. More via Pet Food Industry
